While Very large online platforms (VLOPs) or Very large online search engines (VLOSEs) have been grappling with the Digital Services Act (DSA) since last year, as of 17 February 2024 the DSA now applies to all online platforms in the EU.

The DSA was designed to create a uniform, modern framework for digital services across the EU, to ensure increased transparency and set out an unprecedented new standard for greater accountability of online platforms regarding illegal or potentially harmful online content, as well as seeking to provide better protection for internet users. The DSA provides for a modernised liability regime for online intermediaries.

While the new content moderation obligations are receiving particular attention, the EU is keen to ensure all online platforms comply with all the obligations in the DSA now they are fully in force.
